Weekly Newsletter 24th February 2010

Welcome to this week's newsletter

The transition is finally made.

After five and a half years of working two jobs, I finally make the transition to life with parkrun this week. Thursday is my last day as an employee of Hutchison 3G – the mobile internet phone company - I leave 3 on my 3rd anniversary with the company! 3 are aware of parkrun and quite a few employees now take part each week and they have been a great support to me as parkrun has grown – thanks 3.

Personally, this if a defining moment in my life. To begin with I never thought parkrun could be an employer. I spent many hours in the first few years crafting the parkrun systems at the expense of others. I found myself having to justify the commitment on a regular basis. It was difficult to explain where all this effort would be going, what the goal was and how we could ever turn it into an organisation that could support the growth. I’d like to say a special thank-you to my wife Joanne for allowing me to spend untold hours getting parkrun to where it is today, and to the many who devote their time to parkrun. It’s amazing that we’ve had nearly 36,954 different parkrunners at 1,833 events, and we currently have around 3,500 runners each week at the 29 events, with around 1,000 more joining the parkrun family each week. But what makes parkrun special for me are the individual stories and smiles that I hear and see at every event, and more people enjoying more running, making new contacts and friends, more people entering local events and joining clubs – worth every hour that I’ve put in to parkrun so far!

parkrun is still in its infancy. We have only just started out, there is so much more to do and so much more to come. My dreams of old are now a reality and I have had to create new dreams. My goals have gotten larger as you have increased the mileage at your parkrun event!

I am delighted to be stepping over the threshold and becoming a full-time parkrun employee. We are a small team funded by the sponsors - Anita Afonso is doing brilliant work setting up new events around the country, Chris Wright as General Manager keeps operations and the website going and improves what we offer every week, Joanne on the many administration jobs we have, and I on running the whole thing, working with sponsors and partners, and developing the parkrun software and newsletters. But we are also bolstered with regular help from Roger Wilson (on sponsors and all-round advice), Tom Williams (northern new events), David Rowe and Richard Leyton (on IT), Duncan Gaskell (Finance), Ray Coward (T-shirts and kit), the wonderful Event Directors, and 10,000 more volunteers. Together we are a formidable team and I’m very lucky that some amazing people have chosen to devote their time to parkrun events. As we face the remainder of 2010 I expect we will take on a couple more full-time employees as we accelerate parkrun’s growth and bring free, weekly running to many more thousands.

In closing, I wish to remind everyone that parkrun is a community-led project, that we will always be free to the runner and we will not change the model or ethos of parkrun. We have no commercial ambitions - we operate on a not-for-profit basis where any surpluses are re-invested into the expansion of parkrun and our existing events – and volunteering remains at the heart of our success, which is what makes parkrun events so special. parkrun & I are committed to delivering as many free, 5K, timed runs across the country as are wanted by local communities.

Thank you to everyone. Happy running this weekend!

Opportunity for marathon runners

Jane Nodder is a member of the Mornington Chasers Running Club based in Kentish Town - London, a regular marathon runner and about to run her first parkrun in Finsbury Park this Saturday. She is also a Senior Lecturer and Clinic Tutor in nutritional therapy at the University of Westminster, London, and she is completing a research project as part of the requirements for the MSc Nutritional Medicine in the Faculty of Health & Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey, Guildford.

Jane's research will investigate the extent to which the dietary practices of club runners participating in the London Marathon 2010, meet guidelines for the composition of diets during training for endurance running events. The study will also identify key sources of nutritional information and knowledge amongst this group of athletes. Study participants will be involved in completing an on-line questionnaire and a 7-day Food & Training Diary during the period 22-28 March 2010. The outputs from her work will help to inform initiatives for improving the nutritional knowledge and practices of club level marathon runners.

If any parkrunner is interested they should contact Jane at nutriworks@aol.com

iPhone App

We have keenly awaited the first iPhone application on iTunes targeting parkrunners. Now that there is one available we should point out that these applications are provided by a 3rd parties not related to parkrun and that all revenues go directly to them. We do not plan to introduce nor sell applications but will work with other parties to offer interesting added value applications to parkrunners.

Feedback from the field

I thought you would like to see this. Nice to have a different sort of local newspaper coverage!

All the best from a grateful Brighton parkrunner

I did my 1st race yesterday at Black Park.

What a really friendly and cheerful occasion. Normally I run alone, or with my wife, but it was nice to be with lots of other people who enjoy exercise in the fresh air, and the surroundings and sunshine were so pleasant. We were in two minds about the drive to this run (we can of course run locally) but we enjoyed the run so much, we shall certainly come again. I really worked myself quite hard, and did better than I expected, but was well glad to see the finish point!

Thanks to everyone who volunteered or worked to make it happen.

Barry Watson
Dear All,

Thank you so much for nominating me as January parkrunner, and what a brilliant prize! Thank you Sweatshop, I can't wait to have a new spring in my step!

The Saturday morning parkrun has been a life changing experience for me in many ways. For us 40+ girls, the health benefits of running are enormous and the parkrun itself is a very personal way to challenge yourself to do something about your own fitness. Everyone is so friendly and supportive on a Saturday morning, that you feel a sense of achievement just by finishing a run......a PB and you feel you can stuff chocolate for the rest of the day! parkrun is also a great way to benchmark your fitness as you progress gradually over time, building up with a run or two during the week. Now I've got the bug, I feel very sad if other commitments mean I can't make that 9 o'clock slot on a Saturday!

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Martin, our marvellous organiser. He gives his time so generously each week to make it all happen for us, in the rain, the snow and biting cold we've been experiencing over the last few weeks. He's always smiling and encouraging, a hero in every way. Thankyou so much Martin.

Here's hoping for some warm Spring sunshine in Norman Park soon!

With best wishes,

Isobel

Roundshaw Downs parkrun regulars, the Parris family are exposed in a superb article in the YourCroydon newsletter. See here for the full magazine or here for a cut down version

parkrunner of the week

Name:   Roy Reeder
Club:   The Stragglers
Age:   44
Home parkrun:   Bushy parkrun
Occupation:   Chartered Accountant
Number of Runs:   95 (Bushy 56, Banstead Woods 10, Richmond 7, Wimbledon 3, Leeds and Basingstoke 2 each, Brighton, Cardiff, Bramhall, Middlesbrough, Glasgow, Gorleston, Bedfont, Morden Hall, Croydon, Slough, Bromley, Finsbury Park, South Manchester, Reading, Edinburgh 1 each!)
Number of times volunteered:   About 15 times
What do you do at parkruns:   A variety of things. In the early days at Bushy, I wrote down finishers' positions but that quickly became impractical as numbers grew and sheets of paper were replaced with laptops. I gave out finishing discs at the first few events at Wimbledon and Banstead Woods. Event Director once at Banstead Woods and more recently, I have been car park marshal there, that's a good role to have as you can still run, though it does mean you have to get up very early!
How has parkrun changed your running:   I run far fewer road races now. Instead, my partner, Joanne, and I visit as many different parkruns as we can - I have run 21 different events so far (16 just in 2009!). Looking forward to visiting Milton Keynes, Frimley and Cambridge soon.
What do you like about parkrun:   It's free (I am an accountant after all!), that you just turn up and run, the friendly atmosphere, great organisation (particularly the results service).
Most memorable or funniest parkrun moment:   My first parkrun - Bushy Christmas Day 2004. Paul had very kindly provided mince pies and bubbly to enjoy afterwards, I was hooked!

Happy Running!

Paul from parkrun

Crispy Corner

Out and about

A few of us from the Richmond and Twickenham area made it over to Bromley at the weekend; many thanks to everybody for making us feel welcome there. It’s great to find that while the courses vary so dramatically around the country – the community spirit is always warm. Sadly my time was not quite so scorching (nothing to do with the night before), which brings me onto,..
Crispy Challenge

I had a shock when I checked the calendar the other day and discovered that there are just 14 parkruns left before the end of Crispy Challenge (last run in the challenge will be Saturday 29th May). I really do need to get my act together if I have any chance of beating my target. Thank you to everybody who has made the helpful suggestion “You need to get out and run more”. But it’s good to see that others have made excellent progress. 5 people have beaten their targets – well done to Andrew Mason, Arnold Flanagan, Ashlee Corfe, Catherine Bamford and Kevan Wilkinson. A further 36 challengers have beaten their previous PB, and 29 are within a minute of their target. If you’re interested in taking part in the next challenge, I’ll be starting the next one up at the start of June (details here of course).

Don't mention the barcodes (warning seriously bad pun ahead)

Once again, I haven't mentioned that all events will be going barcode only very soon, or that you should ask around for advice at your local event if you’re wondering what it's all about. Which reminds me – Rich K, who many of you will have seen around the country taking pictures, asked "If an athlete is running with a dog, do they need a bark code?" I did warn you.

Happy Running

Chris
