What’s happening at parkrun this weekend

As we move ever closer to the parkrun tenth anniversary we add another three event locations plus a whole new group of wonderful volunteers and runners to the parkrun family. This week we welcome Rushmoor parkrun & Chelmsford Junior parkrun in the United Kingdom and Naval Hill parkrun in Bloemfontein, South Africa. There are now 397 5k events taking place on Saturday and another 13 Junior 2k events in the UK only.

Every week I am delighted that so many folks come out to play at parkrun. Last week over 65,000 of us found joy whilst jogging with our friends at a parkrun event on Saturday morning. We all appreciate that this wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of the thousands of volunteers who enthusiastically get us around the course and then go on to produce the results we so eagerly await. What a fantastic community these volunteers are.

Therefore, I am always saddened to hear that one of our events has had to be cancelled because there are not enough volunteers to make it happen. This happened again this week. When I started parkrun, I decided that each event would either live or die by the support provided by the local community. We never made any targets for the number of runners attending. We didn’t mind if only 5 folks participated as long as the community were happy to make the event happen. We have never had to close an event permanently because the community didn’t support it. Lets hope that we will never be forced to do so. Each of us can make a contribution to our local event. Volunteering is fun and a great way to add people to your circle of friends. In my experience, these are the best friends you could ever wish for.
