Meet the Sports Scientists Minimize

Jaymie Mart
As the Sports Scientist for Scotland, I will be supporting you guys at the Glasgow and Edinburgh parkruns as often as possible. It’s really great to see so many of you getting stuck in and running, but most importantly having fun in the process. When I come to the parkruns, I want to try and give as many of you as possible a hand with your sports nutrition strategies so that no matter what your sport or distance you’ve got the right ingredients in you to give it your all. My main sport is cycling where I’m currently ranked in the top 30 UCI Elite Women Downhill Mountain Bikers in the world; I’ve also won 6 Scottish Championship titles and 4 Scottish Downhill Mountain Bike Series Overall wins!

As a member of the team covering the North West, you’ll mainly find me at the Hyde Park, Leeds and Middlesbrough Park parkruns, both of which are great events with a fun relaxed atmosphere spread by you, the team behind them. By sharing my time across these events (as well as the other commitments I have in the region) it helps me really get to know you and work with you on to help you get the most out of your running. When not dashing around in my van, I’ve played County Cricket for Lancashire and turned my hand at competitive volleyball and football.

Based in the North West, I cover the Heaton Park and Bramhall Park parkruns. Both events are fantastic and run by a team of really enthusiastic volunteers who make the events fantastic and great fun to work at. Away from the 5K scene, I recently represented Great Britain at the ETU European Age-Group Triathlon Championships in Portugal and the 2009 Championships in Holland.

My home course is Blackweir, Cardiff, although I have worked at five different parkruns so far and met quite a few of the parkrunners along the way as well as the teams behind the events. Because of the friendly community atmosphere, the runners feel comfortable enough to ask me any questions that bother them and I can have lots of great conversations about something I love – Sports Nutrition! I’m also able to use my experience as an 800m, middle distance and endurance runner to hopefully offer the runners something extra in their running, whether they need it for a parkrun or another race.

At the moment I mainly attend Banstead Woods and Gorleston Cliffs parkruns and look forward to it every time I’m able to nip down. Banstead Woods is set in beautiful woodland and, when combined with the amazing team there, makes for an extremely friendly atmosphere. Gorleston Cliffs, on the other hand, takes you along the Norfolk coastline and whilst having fewer numbers is a great event, one which I look forward to seeing grow. Running aside, I like to think I bring a mixed bag of knowledge to the team, I’ve competed nationally at the javelin, play hockey and know a thing or two about shot putt, rowing, football and the physiological requirements of Motor Sport drivers!

Looking after South London & South East, I’m fortunate enough to head along to all the ‘Parks’; Hove, Bushy, Wimbledon, Richmond, Thames Valley Business and War Memorial. The parkrun events are really enjoyable to work at due to a great community spirit created between the organisers and runners. Whilst I am there to answer sports nutrition questions and offer advice to the runners as a Sports Scientists, it’s great to also be apart for the general Saturday morning’s melee. I’d like to think that I could be described as a keen team sports player, focusing mainly on rugby union, something which has taken me to South Africa and New Zealand as well as allowing me to run out for my University First Team.
