The Organisation

Introduction

parkrun Global Limited is a UK-based registered charity (1175062) and a UK registered company (09411750) limited by guarantee. We are governed by a Charity Board of Trustees.

The Board's role is to set and oversee the Charity's strategic direction. The Board monitors the delivery of the Charity's objectives, ensures the organisation works within the charitable objects, upholds its values and governance, ensures appropriate use of funds, and holds to account, advises and supports the Chief Executive, who leads the Senior Leadership Team towards achieving the Charity's vision and mission and delivering against the strategic plan.

The Board of Trustees is led by the Chair, Gavin Megaw and formally meets six times a year.

Sub-committees of Trustees and staff report on Finance and Audit (Chaired by Jeremy Townsend), Governance and Risk (Chaired by Christine Gibbons), and Safeguarding (Chaired by Gavin Megaw). There is a separate Remuneration Committee (Chaired by Gavin Megaw) that reviews and sets Executive pay.

Objectives (Charitable Objects)

The charity's objectives (often referred to as the objects) are for the benefit of the public in the world:

  1. to promote community participation in healthy recreation by:
    1. organising and providing running events; and
    2. creating opportunities for members of the community to participate in and/or volunteer at such running events;
  2. to further such other wholly charitable purposes as the trustees may from time to time decide.

The charity's vision is: A healthier and happier planet

The charity's mission is: To transform health and happiness by empowering people to come together, to be active, social and outdoors.

Parkrun Global Limited is a UK-based global charity and the parent company of the parkrun group of companies. The registered office is 4th Floor, Frameworks, 2 Sheen Road, Richmond, United Kingdom, TW9 1AE.

A number of registered companies form the parkrun group of companies, and operate either as subsidiaries or under licence. Where parkrun exists in other territories not listed below it does so as a volunteer group, overseen and managed by parkrun Global.

parkrun subsidiaries (non-territorial entities)

There are two non-territorial subsidiary entities within the parkrun group:
Parkrun Trading Limited is a limited company and a wholly owned subsidiary of parkrun Global Limited.
PSH Retail Limited is a limited company and a wholly owned subsidiary of parkrun Trading Limited, itself a wholly owned subsidiary of parkrun Global Limited.

Trustees

Our voluntary board of trustees meets formally six times a year with members of the executive and Senior Leadership Team present.

Gavin Megaw, appointed 1 October 2018

Gavin is Group Managing Director at Hanover Communications and Chair of The Playbook. He has trusted connections across politics, media, business and sport. Gavin joined Hanover from The Football League, where he was Director of Marketing and Communications and The League's primary broadcast spokesperson. He was previously a Board Director and Head of Corporate Communications and Issues Management at Fleishman-Hillard London. Originally from Northern Ireland, Gavin started his career in politics with the Conservative Party after graduating from Loughborough University. He is passionate about the physical and mental health benefits of sport and reducing societal inequality. He has participated in over 100 parkruns and volunteered more than 80 times.

Christine Gibbons, appointed non-Executive Director 21 July 2016

Christine has been a trustee since October 2017 and a non-Executive Director since July 2016. She graduated in pharmacy and became a hospital Chief Pharmacist in 1990. After completing her MBA at Cranfield Business School she worked in hospital management at board and national level for 16 years. After retirement she has devoted her time to unpaid trustee positions in the charity and not-for-profit sector. In particular, she is Vice-Chairman of Cycling UK, trustee of Access Sport and trustee of Geraint Thomas Cycling Trust. She is currently a Council member of Bath University where she graduated in pharmacy. She loves volunteering and running at parkrun and has participated in over 550 parkruns including more than 60 volunteering duties.

Jeremy Townsend, appointed non-Executive Director 21 July 2016

Jeremy has been a trustee since October 2017 and a non-Executive Director since July 2016. Jeremy currently also sits on the board and chairs the Audit Committee for NHS England, PZ Cussons plc, and is a Director for Marks and Spencer and Ocado. He was previously on the boards and chaired the audit committees for Morrisons plc and Galliford Try plc. Between 2010 and 2020 Jeremy was the CFO of Rentokil plc - he was also their CIO between 2013 and 2020. Prior to this Jeremy held senior finance positions with Mitchells & Butler, Sainsburys and EY. Jeremy is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, is a qualified Corporate Treasurer and has a degree in Management Sciences from Manchester University. Jeremy has participated in over 460 parkruns including over 65 volunteering roles. He loves parkrun touring and has visited over 190 parkruns in 15 different countries.

Sonya Byers, appointed January 2023

Long-standing parkrun volunteer Ambassador with a passion for delivering equity, diversity, inclusion and social impact. Sonya is Chief Executive of the non-profit Women in Transport with a mission to support and advocate for women working in transport. She has participated in over 550 parkruns including over 300 volunteering roles.

Nat Poulter, appointed January 2023

Joint CEO of Jungle Creations, a media, marketing and commerce business that has appeared on the Financial Times list of Europe’s fastest growing companies. Nat is a digital community expert with a demonstrable track record of creating content and channels to reach diverse and hard to reach audiences and has introduced world class diversity, equity and inclusion practices in his agency. Nat has participated in over 15 parkruns.

Sarah Powell, appointed January 2023

Chief Executive of British Gymnastics. Sarah joined British Gymnastics in late 2021 to lead a major remodelling of its safeguarding, operations, culture and future strategy. She was previously CEO of Sport Wales, a former international sportswoman, and has participated in over 25 parkruns.

Professor Sir Jonathan Stafford Nguyen-Van-Tam, appointed March 2023

Former Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England. He is presently Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Nottingham. Sir Jonathan is highly influential across public health and will help the organisation think through its public health positioning with a focus on delivering greater impact within communities across the world. Sir Jonathan has participated in over 40 parkruns.

Gordon Seabright, appointed January 2023

Previously CEO of the Eden Project, Gordon has worked at a senior level for a host of charitable organisations. He now leads Creative Land Trust, a charity established by the Mayor of London, Bloomberg Philanthropies and Arts Council England to solve the problem of the loss of artists and creatives from London. He is a trustee at Five Talents, a charity that delivers financial inclusion for women in East Africa. He has participated in over 50 parkruns.

John Vickers, appointed January 2023

Chartered Accountant and currently Director of Finance and Corporate Services at St. Christopher’s Hospice, the largest hospice in the UK, with an annual income of £30m. John has extensive experience of working in charity finance; prior to St Christopher’s Hospice he was Director of Finance and Corporate Services at the Design Council. John has participated in over 200 parkruns.
